        September 11, 2011 Reflection

sept 11 2011 never forget

While writing this blog, I’m overwhelmed by the emotions and thoughts that come to my mind. I was working from my home office late last night, and decided to take a well needed break from real estate. I walked down the hall to find my beautiful wife, two daughters, and son watching a documentary on 9/11.  As I sit down with my family, we shed tears as we listen to countless stories of the deeply affected.  My children: who are now twelve, fourteen and sixteen, now knowing the depth of the situation, were too young to understand the complexity of the major catastrophe that America found herself in at 8:46 am on that frightful day.

I had sat down of the couch just as they were talking about Flight 93. This was the last flight that was supposedly headed towards the White house or the US Capitol to cause even more damage that day. On the plane, the passengers had taken matters into their own hands, and the name of Todd Beemer in the interview came up. He and his fellow passengers came up with the idea to storm the cockpit and as a result, the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Todd and Flight 93 selflessly saved their fellow Americans from anymore damage that had already been done.

It’s all coming back now. As I sit at home with my wife and children, remembering all the brave and selfless acts on this fateful day; it hits home. And in this time of remembrance, the only reason why we are close to normal again is because of the brave men and women, of the US armed services. Who display the same daily courage as the unarmed passengers on Flight 93. Who stood up for what was right even in the face of adversity. America has always stood for what is right and always will.

Here in Hampton Roads, we feel the cost of the price for freedom, for as we all know freedom isn’t free. In my church, we lost two members to the helicopter crash in Afghanistan on August 6th, 2011.  The job of the American Hero, allows life in America to carry on each day, and often goes unnoticed.  But if it weren’t for these men and women, especially on the day we as a nation needed them the most, the outcome of our nation could have ended differently. We count ourselves blessed to live in a country that is free. Let us never forget to say thank you to the men and women, and their families who pay the price for our freedom every day.

I hope each one of you that reads this message will have an opportunity to stop for just a moment this week when you come across of our American Heroes…our military men and women…. our police officers and fireman...that particular Hero in your life that stands for all that is good in America…and personally thank them for making America the land of the free and the truly the home of the brave.
