Say “Buen Provecho” For Our Best Local Tacos
We LOVE tacos! In honor of Cinco De Mayo this week, here are some of the best that Hampton Roads, and Northeast North Carolina have to offer.
Jessy’s tacos are served street-style on a corn tortilla with cilantro, onion, and a lime wedge. Filling options include barbacoa (lamb), asada (beef), carnitas (pork), lengua (beef tongue, and flor de clabaza (sauteed squash blossom). These are authentic Mexican flavors! A stand-out is their chorizo taco with the sausage sliced thin and grilled to perfection. Jessy’s also offers a plant-based chorizo taco. Jessy’s has restaurants in Ocean View, Ghent, and Virginia Beach.
For fans of the fish taco. Their mahi-mahi tacos are the most ordered at Mama K’s. They are sauteed or blackened to perfection and served with scallions, jasmine rice, cabbage, cheddar/jack cheeses, and their own lime sour cream sauce. Mama Kwan’s is located in Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Krazy Trompos recently opened a brick and mortar location on Rosemont Road in Virginia Beach. Prior to that they offered their street-style Mexican food out of food trucks. They offer classic street tacos using fresh local ingredients - corn tortillas, cucumbers, onion, cilantro, radish, salsa, and lime. Options include steak, marinated pork, chicken, chorizo, lengua, birria brisket, carnitas pork, cactus, and vegan. They also offer a keto version made with a cheese tortilla instead of corn or flour.
This taco slinger is located within the Precarious Beer Hall in Williamsburg. The tacos are served on homemade tortillas. The formula at the Electric Circus is to blend the art of traditional street tacos with progressive ingredient choices. All tacos can be made into bowls.
Sanctuary is located in Norfolk’s NEON arts district and features artwork as well as tacos. You can order your tacos exactly how you want them by using their customized check lists. There is an outdoor seating area too. Prices are very reasonable, and Sanctuary get consistently good reviews.
Pelon’s touts itself as an authentic California-style Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere is decidedly relaxed. Their vegan taco is a standout with zucchini, Anaheim pepper, onion, green and red bell peppers, and a coriander garnish. Tasty! Add fresh cheese if you are vegetarian. They have restaurants located in Norfolk, and two in Virginia Beach.
As the name implies, they are a small dish restaurant, and made the list for their Duck Confit tacos. The menu changes but always features the tacos because patrons ask for them! The poultry is cooked in a prime mix of duck fat and seasonings and melts in your mouth. It is topped with slaw, pickled red onions, and cilantro.
