Our Favorite Local Coffee Shops and Roasters
Our Favorite Local Coffee Shops & Roasters
The Hampton Roads area of Virginia, as well as the Northeastern and Outer Banks parts of North Carolina are rich in attractions, recreation, places to visit, and history. They also are abundant with fantastic, local, independently owned coffee houses and roasters. Here are a few of our favorites:
An independently owned and family operated coffee roaster and cafe serving coffee, specialty drinks, desserts, and bistro cuisine. They roast their own coffee in small batches. Along with the tasty menu items, Stella creates wonderful special dishes, and beautiful desserts on site! A recent expansion and renovation has created more seating, both indoors and outside along Colonial Avenue in Ghent.
Mea Culpa Cafe | Norfolk
A ‘must try’ for local coffee aficionados. Mea Culpa’s homemade fruit syrup and herb infused lattes are the stuff of dreams. This is the former Waffletina pop-up team, so many of their dishes feature delectable liege waffles. Check out their Instagram for weekly specials. The socially conscious shop hosts a community food fridge on their front porch. You can visit @757CommunityFridges for information on how to donate to this wonderful effort.
Fair Grounds Coffee | Norfolk
Fair Grounds has been a fixture in Ghent since 2001, and serves a group of very loyal customers. They offer fair trade coffee and tea, and locally produced baked goods. The ambiance is casual and cozy. The shop works with community organizations, artists, and musicians by hosting events and fundraisers to give back to the community they love so much. One of our favorite experiences at Fair Grounds is enjoying our coffee along with a chat with local celebrity ‘Hollywood’. She is one of the things that makes Norfolk great!
Cure | Norfolk & Smithfield
The original Cure is located in a historic building along the cobblestone streets of Norfolk’s Freemason District. They serve a wonderful selection of espresso beverages, wine and craft beers, and a food menu including breakfast, brunch, lunch, and shareable options. Their second location is located in the historic town of Smithfield.
17 Hands features espresso drinks and some inventive specialty coffee drinks, along with the fantastic baked goods made in the shop by Robin and her staff. This is the place to go to satisfy your sweet tooth. They also have keto-friendly and gluten-free dessert menus. Check out their Instagram for specials and new menu items.
Three Ships Coffee Roasters | Virginia Beach
Three Ships flagship shop and roasting headquarters is located in the ViBe Arts District of Virginia Beach. Another location is coming to the Hilltop Area. Their beans are really outstanding and used by many of our favorites listed here. We most recently enjoyed a really good black cold brew. They offer attention to detail, and a deep love for coffee, and it shows. Next time you are at the Old Beach Farmers Market, stop by for a great cup of joe!
Pourfavor | Virginia Beach & Suffolk
Pourfavor is a Puerto Rican based coffee shop, and our winner for their original coffee flights! They base their business on coffee, community, and inclusivity. If you go, be sure to try their Cuban sandwich made with Pan Sobao (authentic Puerto Rican bread).
Battle Grounds Coffeehouse & Grill | Chesapeake
A cute little shop located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake on Battlefield Boulevard. The coffee drinks are very good, our favorite is the rosewater latte. Their breakfast menu is a nice mixture of sweet and savory options.
Taxus Street Coffee | Chesapeake
Taxus Street is a small batch, locally-owned coffee roaster working out of the Big Ugly Brewing Co. in Chesapeake. They value bold flavors and drinkability, so they source and roast their coffee for those features. Their menu includes traditional espresso drinks.
Gather | Chesapeake
The mission of Gather is to help people experience community, while enjoying great beverages and food. To the end, 100% of their profit goes back into the local community to help those in need.
Firehouse Coffee 1881 | Hampton
This coffee shop and cafe is located in the historic 1881 Fire Station at Fort Monroe. Their coffee and baked goods are locally sourced, and they make their sandwiches and salads on premises. They have bike racks and tables out front making for a great place for a pit stop on a scenic bike excursion.
The goal at Column 15 is to turn the Peninsula into a source of quality coffee, with nitro cold brew as their flagship product. Their beans are locally roasted and specially crafted to reduce bitterness. Co15 uses only single origin, fair-trade, organically-sourced coffees.
Aromas is one of the few coffee houses listed that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They put an emphasis on fresh roasted coffee, fine teas, and fresh healthy food items. They roast their own beans, plus bake their pies, cookies, cakes, scones, muffins, and quiche in house. Their are gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available.
Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters | Yorktown
Located on Main Street in Yorktown Village, Mobjack Bay Petite Cafe’ and Coffee Roastery sits inside the Historic Cole Digges House (c.1730).
