Mardi Gras Celebration 2021 Style

Mardi Gras Celebration 2021 Style

Mardi Gras as we know it is celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent). This year that day is February 16th. The Mardi Gras season begins on Epiphany (January 6th). In some countries the period between Epiphany and Fat Tuesday is known as Carnival. This year, we are sharing how you can celebrate in style at home. You can easily adopt Mardi Gras’ beloved traditions no matter where you are.

Bake a King Cake | This is a sweet, circular cake frosted in the green, purple, and yellow colors of Mardi Gras. Traditionally, a plastic baby is baked into the King Cake, and whoever gets the slice with the baby is bestowed with luck. We recommend The Bonbonnier in Norfolk for their tasty King Cakes, or you can bake one of your own

Order Themed Takeout | You can surely find New Orleans-inspired dishes in your area. Think gumbo, po’boys, hushpuppies, or fried seafood. There are some great options here in Hampton Roads including Mango Mangeaux in Hampton, and Lil’ Bit NOLA in Virginia Beach.

Make a Favorite Mardi Gras Dish Yourself | Here is a quick InstaPot Jambalaya that tastes like it's straight from the Big Easy. And this classic Gumbo recipe highlights the Andouille sausage for real cajun flavor, serve it with crusty bread to soak up the flavorful broth.

Set The Stage | You can get into the Mardi Gras spirit with a bit of decoration. Anything purple, gold, green, and glittery can help set the scene. Lighting candles will make a room feel festive too. If you have kids, you can purchase inexpensive masks and some craft supplies for mask decorating. Add plastic beads and you are ready to enjoy the celebration.

Mardi Gras Entertainment | If you want a low-key vibe, you can watch a movie that features Mardi Gras in the plot. You can also turn on some jazz or zydeco music. Here is a list of songs that will kick-start your playlist. For the real 2021 vibe, check out this virtual tour of this year’s ‘house floats’, an alternative to the famous parades that have to be cancelled this year.

There is really no excuse for missing out on the Mardi Gras festivities this year, we hope these ideas have inspired you to have your own Fat Tuesday fun.
