Locals Only Things To Do This Labor Day Weekend
Local’s Only Things to Do
This Labor Day Weekend
The final weekend of the summer beckons! Hopefully you have traveled, picnicked, enjoyed the beach, and dined al fresco this summer. Saying goodbye to summer is hard, so why not go out with a bang? Embrace some of these great local things to do this weekend, it may be your last opportunity to fit in some summer fun. Looks like the weather is going to be nice here in Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina too, so get out there while the tourists are at the beach.
Take A Walk Outside | Grab your family or friends, trek through nature, and enjoy our beautiful weather. It is important to slow down, and smell the fresh air. Your walk can be short or long. Consider packing a picnic lunch. Our favorite places for nature walks include the Chesapeake Arboretum and the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Chesapeake, the Mariners Museum Park Trails in Newport News, the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth, False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach, and Currituck Banks Reserve in Corolla, North Carolina.
Get Away To A Local Hotel | This weekend is famous for leaving town, but why not consider a true staycation at a local hotel, where you will not have your usual household chores to worry about. You can enjoy our area from a different point of view. And, since you will be saving on travel expenses, you may want to up the luxury factor. Our suggestion for an urban getaway is Glass Light Hotel in downtown Norfolk. The MeadowBrook Farm Bed & Breakfast in Suffolk offers the ambience of a peaceful 30 acre farm.
Try Paddle-Boarding | Paddle-boarding and kayaking are relaxing and also a great way to workout. So you won’t feel bad for skipping out on the gym this weekend. Adventure Kayak & SUP offer guided tours throughout our region.
Explore A New Museum | You can break up your outdoor activities with a creative indoor one. Visit a local museum that you have not been to before. You can learn about art, science, or history while you are at it. Some ideas include: the Summer of Women exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Virginia Beach, the Virginia Air & Space Museum’s new Space Explorers Gallery offers dozens of interactive displays, and the unique exhibits at the Muscarelle Museum of Art on the campus of William & Mary.
Book A Dinner Cruise | It’s time to change up the location of your dinner. How about the sunset as your backdrop? You can book a private dinner cruise in Virginia Beach. The Spirit of Norfolk offers dinner cruises leaving from the Waterside District in Norfolk.
Shop Your Heart Out | Hint, hint… There are a lot of sales this time of year. This may be just the time to shop for your winter must-haves, or get an early start on holiday shopping when the crowds are low. Norfolk Premium Outlets is a great place to start, or you can hit the unique boutique shops in Smithfield. Don’t forget to “treat yo’ self”.
Eat Some Ice Cream | Fresh ice cream is a rare treat. Try different flavors and after you enjoy your cones, order a pint to go! Our best local creameries include Lolly’s Creamery (they have donuts too). Their special flavors for this weekend are Trail Mix, Ube, and Frosted Animal Cookie. The creamery at Bergie’s Breadbasket in Chesapeake serves some of the area’s best ice cream. Their fresh peach ice cream is the stuff of dreams.
Build A Bonfire | Gathering around a fire pit brings out great conversation. Invite your friends and neighbors to a bonfire this weekend. Folks can bring snacks to share. Solo Stove’s Bonfire is currently on sale, and it travels so you can have a fire at home or on the beach.
Test Your Culinary Skills | Since our days of grilling are on the wane, consider upgrading your pizza night by trying out some artisan pies on your grill. Grab some pizza dough (Trader Joes is really great), olive oil, and your favorite toppings. Here are some idea starters.
Go To A Baseball Game | Head outside to enjoy a Norfolk Tides baseball game at Tides Stadium in Norfolk. The tides are in town this weekend, playing against the Charlotte Knights. There will be fireworks on Friday and Saturday nights.
Hope that you gather some inspiration from our ideas on how to spend a great local weekend right here in your own backyard. Let us know if you have any other ideas in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.
