How to Celebrate July 4th in Hampton Roads

With so many cities making up Hampton Roads, there’s no shortage of events to attend for any holiday. With such a strong military presence here, you know our July 4th celebrations are going to be just as grand!

In case you need help deciding how you and your family will spend the holiday, we’ve compiled a list of some of the Independence Day events here in Hampton Roads.


Tuesday, July 4

“Annual Fourth of July Great American Picnic & Fireworks Presented by AT&T,” Waterside Drive, 3-10 PM

Bring your family and friends to Town Point Park from 5-10 PM! Guests can feast on traditional all-American food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue, seafood, buttered corn on the cob, juicy watermelon, lemonade, with all the fixin's! Relax on the lawn and enjoy the sound of live entertainment along the beautiful Downtown Norfolk Waterfront. Then, watch as the sky lights up with the fireworks display at approximately 9:30 PM!

Tuesday, July 4

“July 4th Celebration,” Mount Trashmore Park, 310 Edwin Drive

Celebrate America's independence with live music by local musicians, delicious foods, and of course, booming fireworks! When the parking lots at Mount Trashmore Park are full, Edwin Drive between Independence Boulevard and South Boulevard may close.

“Stars and Stripes Explosion,” on the beach at 20th Street, and in the 17th, 24th and 31st Street Parks

Stars & Stripes Explosion is an unabashed tribute to the ideals, personalities, history, and music of the United States! A stage erected on the beach at 20th Street becomes the focal point for a performance by Symphonicity, the symphony orchestra of the City of Virginia Beach, and the Virginia Beach Chorale. With a program that encompasses patriotic songs, Broadway standards, movie themes, and folk music, nostalgia reigns as the presentation segues into a magical fireworks show that explodes over the oceanfront in brilliant colors and patterns. Multiple performances starting at 7:30 PM! Fireworks at 9:30 PM.


Tuesday, July 4

“Independence Day Fireworks” 901 Crawford Street, 9-9:30 PM

Enjoy the annual Independence Day celebration by viewing fireworks over the Elizabeth River, from the Seawall or along Crawford Parkway.


Monday, July 3

“Celebrate Freedom – Concert & Fireworks,” at Chesapeake City Park, 900 City Park Drive, from 5-10 PM

Celebrate America's Birthday with the U.S. Army TRADOC Band, from Fort Monroe, providing stirring patriotic sounds. Following the concert, fireworks by Pyrotechnico will illuminate the sky after sunset. Parks, Recreation and Tourism also brings you the best in children's activities and family entertainment: face painting, a 3-years-and-under play area, giant lawn games, inflatables, and more. Free admission and $5 fee for on-site parking. Bring lawn chairs and/or blanket (no pop-up tents permitted). Food vendors will be on-site.

Tuesday, July 4

“4th of July Celebration at Lakeside Park,” 1441 Bainbridge Blvd., from 10 AM-4 PM

Enjoy a 4th of July tradition in Chesapeake! The event features a parade, entertainment, food, games, paddleboat rides, children's crafts, and family fun! The event is free to the public.


Saturday, July 1

“Pre-Fourth of July Family Cookout,” Morgan Memorial Library, 443 West Washington Street, 1-3 PM

Celebrate Independence Day a little early with a day of free food, fun, and festivities! Games, contests, and prizes will be held in the parking lot. One meal ticket per person. Food is first come, first served, while supplies last. It's recommended to arrive early in case you'd like to get something to eat.

Tuesday, July 4

“Stars & Stripes Spectacular,” Constant’s Wharf Park, 100 East Constance Road

Enjoy the Stars and Stripes Spectacular, as the skies of Suffolk light up with the firework show over the Nansemond River at Constant's Wharf Park & Marina. The park will open at 5:30 PM, with entertainment, children's activities, local merchandise vendors, and food choices available. The firework show will begin at 9 PM for the whole family to enjoy! Music will be by the popular band, Hotcakes. The Children's Area is only $5, for kids 12 and younger. There will be free shuttles from the First Baptist Church, Godwin Courts, and City Hall parking lots, beginning at 5:15 PM.


Tuesday, July 4

“July 4th at Fort Monroe,” intersection of Griffith and Fenwick Roads, 10 AM-10 PM

Family fun activities will take place in the Wherry Quarter of Fort Monroe. Food vendors will be onsite. The day starts at 10 AM with a Flag Ceremony at the Flagstaff Bastion, to honor President James Monroe. Beaches and Engineer Wharf Fishing Pier will be open from sunrise to sunset. City of Hampton lifeguards will be on duty from 10 AM–6 PM.

Stop by the Casemate Museum, from 10:30 AM-4:30 PM to explore the rich history and gather Fort Monroe National Monument Junior Ranger program information and Passport stamps. From 3:30-8:30 PM, bring your lawn chairs, picnic basket, and blankets to Wherry Quarter and explore the many family-friendly activities, including games, give-away items, and crafts, as well as exhibits from NASA Langley Research Center.

At 7 PM, enjoy the high energy, electrifying sounds of the USAF Heritage of America, "Full Spectrum.” Pyrotecnico of New Castle, PA will present their fireworks display at 9:15 PM on Mill Creek.

Tuesday, July 4

“4th of July in the Abbitt Planetarium – Spirit of America,” Virginia Living Museum, 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., from 5-10:30 PM

Celebrate America with this patriotic laser show in the Virginia Living Museum's nice cool theater. "Spirit of America" mixes great patriotic music with America-inspired rock and roll and songs that have defined American music. Rock on to great artists like John Fogerty, Garth Brooks, Lee Greenwood, and more. Recommended for ages 6 and up. Shown at 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 PM.

“4th of July Stars in the Sky,” Victory Landing Park, 50 25th Street, 7-10 PM

Everyone is invited to the Virginia Peninsula's biggest Independence Day party. The waterside park, which offers spectacular views of the James River, will be filled with 20,000 people, celebrating our nation's birthday. The evening begins with a variety of vendors offering our favorite foods. As dusk approaches, the stage comes alive with music. As the last note from the concert ends, the sky over the James River explodes with a kaleidoscope of color in a spectacular fireworks show.
