Breast cancer awareness month

go pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we here at TREG would like to recognize all of those battling with and those who have survived breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Association has some wonderful events lined up to help support the cause and raise awareness and fund research to help fight the disease. Hampton Roads is host to several walks, fundraisers and other events to help raise awareness and find a cure.
According to breastcancer.org “About 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.” Statistically speaking woman are more often diagnosed with breast cancer, but men are also susceptible. 24.5% of Women ages 55-64 years in the U. S. have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Less than 1% of men are affected by the disease. Though this is a rather small percentage, those who have a family history of breast cancer or health troubles are recommended for testing.

Donating

Research and aid does not come free or cheap. Any and all help is appreciated and any individual effort helps in the attempt to find a cure. Here are a couple of sites where you can donate. Really, even a little makes a difference.
It is however, important to make sure your donations are being utilized the best way possible, Some charities may not be what they seem, so be sure to do some research and be certain your contribution is being used to fund the proper organization. This site offers some advice in the way of donating to specific organizations.
Some advice from "Think Before You Pink" when donating to breast cancer causes:
  • Does any money from this purchase go to support breast cancer programs? How much?
  • What organization will get the money?
  • What will they do with the funds, and how do these programs turn the tide of the breast cancer epidemic?
  • Is there a "cap" on the amount the company will donate?
  • Has this maximum donation already been met? Can you tell?
  • Does this purchase put you or someone you love at risk for exposure to toxins linked to breast cancer?
  • What is the company doing to ensure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic.
