4 Must Visit Websites for DIY Homeowners
I have a confession to make. The internet stunts my DIY growth. I start to wonder about a project, or an idea floats through my mind about a remodeling idea and I head to Google. The sheer number of websites offering advice, ideas, and instructions always leaves me lost in a sea of choices. There are so many options out there that I end up doing nothing.
So I decided to do a little website detox and try focusing on a few quality sites for ideas and instructions. I wanted to share with you the four websites that I love the most for homeowners who DIY.
1. This Old House www.thisoldhouse.com
When I was a kid, I could not comprehend how anyone could bear to watch Bob Vila giving instructions on replacing rotting fence posts. Now that I own a home that includes a questionable section of fencing that I fear my dogs will knock over any day I understand. This Old House isn’t just for old houses, but if your house IS old (like mine) it is nice to know that other people are struggling with the same odd problems (did that crack in the wall grow last night??)
2. Apartment Therapy www.apartmenttherapy.com
Again, don’t let the name fool you. The best parts of this site are the DIY home makeovers people post and the before and after snapshots. There are great ideas, especially for those on a budget, and many DIY homeowners are excited to share the details and techniques they mastered in their latest round of renovations. While not as educational as some of the other sites here, the inspiration is worth it. Take a peek at their site and get inspired.
3. Instructables www.instructables.com
This website brings together a global community of makers, DIYers, and people who like to share. You can look up almost anything, and someone has made an instructable with pictures and words to help you do something, build something, or fix something. I’ve used this site a ton for figuring out everything from tile technique to fixing a lamp. The photos make instructions easy to follow, and a huge library means you can find advice on almost anything.
4. Ana White www.ana-white.com
This website is what I strive to be able to do as a DIY homeowner. Ana White provides “easy” furniture building plans that look fabulous and allow you to build solid furniture at a fraction of the price. My disclaimer is I have yet to build something. I have only visited this site a million times and imagined the feeling of accomplishment I would experience after building a piece of her furniture. I hope that changes soon, but until then I will just continue to enjoy the great looking stuff and maybe print a few plans that I love.
In the interest of keeping things more simple and streamlined, I wanted to share the 4 DIY sites I have been visiting a lot lately. They offer so much for the interested homeowner without overwhelming you with too many choices and not enough information. What are your favorite sites? Share with us in the comments!
